Back in May of this year (2019), a second National Survey on the prevalence of violence against women in Morocco shared upsettingly high percentages of violence against women in urban and rural areas, with national rates standing at 54.4%. Most shocking is the low number of women who report the abuse: only 6.6% of women who experienced sexual abuse filed a complaint against their abuser(s). “This low value can be attributed to a lack of trust in police and the social shame tied to victims who report abuse” (Morocco World News, 2019).

The study, conducted between January 2 through March 10 in 2019, reported 12.4% of Moroccan women had experienced sexual assaults in public spaces within the past twelve months while 24.3% of Moroccan female employees reported sexual assault in the workplace.

Silence is indeed a factor that enables further violence against women. While there are laws in Morocco providing women the right to file complaints against their abuser(s), not every victim has a voice—especially those who are victims of human and sex trafficking. Beauty For Ashes strives to be a voice for those without one by raising awareness about the issue of human and sex trafficking. We work to prevent young girls from experiencing sexual abuse and protect them from being exploited. For those who have been rescued from trade, we provide support to restore them in a holistic manner. We support and work with young girls until they become independent and will be safe once they leave our home in Fes.

Morocco is just the tip of the iceberg in the fight against human trafficking. Because it is the main hub between three main trade routes of human trafficking—Europe, Africa, and the rest of the world—Beauty For Ashes is strategically positioned to address this worldwide issue. If we do not stop trafficking here, it will continue around the world; but if we stand against it, we can make an impact.
